The first start-up of a twin screw extruder gearbox begins before the main motor is switched on.
Correct mounting, reliable oil circulation and suitable cooling are essential preparation steps. Shaft connections, rotation direction and protective interlocks also need verification before the drive carries a production load.
Whether the gearbox is newly installed, replaced or refurbished, use the order-specific drawings and operating instructions as the acceptance reference.
This checklist helps organize the checks. Oil specifications, pressure limits, temperature settings and tightening values must come from the documentation for the supplied unit.
Check the gearbox nameplate against the confirmed order. Verify the model, reduction ratio, permitted input speed and relevant connection details.
Confirm that the installation team has the correct:
Review any storage or preservation requirements before installation. Transport protection, shipping plugs and operating breathers must be handled according to the instructions.
For replacement projects, confirm that changes to the motor, coupling, base or auxiliary systems have been included in the installation plan.
Inspect the base and mounting surfaces for cleanliness, damage and adequate support. Confirm that locating features and fasteners have been installed correctly.
Verify alignment between the motor, coupling, gearbox and extruder process section using the specified procedure. Tightening mounting bolts must not pull a misaligned assembly into position.
Check input and output connections for correct engagement, axial positioning and retention. Where spline sleeves connect the screw shafts, verify their installation direction and locking arrangement against the drawing.
For an intermeshing twin screw system, confirm the required relationship between the two screw assemblies.
A flexible coupling accommodates specified movement; it does not remove the need for alignment.
Do not assume the gearbox arrives filled with operating oil. Confirm its delivery condition before starting any drive.
Check the specified lubricant type, viscosity grade and compatibility with any preservation residue. Use clean filling equipment and the required filtration.
Fill to the level specified for the gearbox’s installation position and checking condition. Distinguish a stopped-system level from any level required during circulation.
Adding extra oil is not a substitute for confirming the correct level.
Also check that drain plugs, inspection covers and pipe connections are secure, and that the required venting arrangement is in place.
For units with heaters, confirm the minimum starting conditions and heater controls before operating the lubrication system.
For a gearbox with an independently driven lubrication pump, start and verify the oil system before enabling the main motor.
Check pump rotation using the approved commissioning method. Confirm the required valve positions, oil circulation and pressure at the specified monitoring points.
Inspect filters, hoses, rigid pipes and connections for leakage or abnormal behavior. Where flow indicators are provided, verify their condition.
A running pump or a pressure reading alone does not confirm that every lubrication point receives the required oil. Complete the checks defined for the supplied circuit.
If pressure fails to establish, stop and investigate oil level, pump operation, valve positions, air entry and restrictions. Do not repeatedly start the main drive to troubleshoot an unresolved lubrication problem.
Verify the heat exchanger’s water connections against its diagram. Plate and tubular coolers can have different connection arrangements, so pipe position alone is not a reliable guide.
Confirm that available water quality, temperature, pressure and flow meet the cooler’s requirements. Inspect supply strainers, valves and drainage arrangements where fitted.
Check for leakage and confirm that pipes are supported without placing unnecessary loads on the cooler connections.
Determine whether cooling water should be admitted immediately or controlled according to oil temperature. Follow the unit’s procedure rather than leaving every cooling valve fully open by default.
The gearbox’s mechanical capacity and its thermal operating conditions both matter during continuous production.
Verify the installed monitoring functions and their settings.
Depending on the supplied equipment, these may include:
Confirm which conditions prevent starting, produce an alarm or stop the drive. Test these functions using an approved method without deliberately creating damaging conditions.
Check the torque limiter’s specified trip setting and proximity switch arrangement where fitted. Keep guards in place before powered testing.
Do not bypass a missing start permission simply to obtain a first run. Establish why the condition is unsatisfied.
Define whether the first test covers the gearbox alone or the complete connected extruder.
A gearbox test procedure must not be assumed to authorize cold or empty rotation of an assembled extruder. Barrel temperature, residual material, screw clearances and other machine requirements must also be satisfied.
Confirm motor and gearbox rotation directions using the prescribed test method and clearly stated viewing directions.
Begin at the permitted test condition, then follow the specified speed and loading sequence. If abnormal noise, vibration, leakage, pressure loss or rapid temperature change occurs, stop and investigate before continuing.
Keep a commissioning record for comparison during later maintenance.
| Item | Information to record |
|---|---|
| Identification | Gearbox model, serial number and commissioning date |
| Installation | Alignment results and connection checks |
| Lubrication | Oil specification, level-check condition and operating pressure |
| Cooling | Water supply conditions and cooler operation |
| Test conditions | Speed, load, duration and ambient temperature |
| Observations | Oil temperature, noise, vibration and leakage |
| Protection | Interlock tests and confirmed settings |
A satisfactory short test does not establish full-load capability. Continue monitoring during the agreed commissioning sequence and follow the supplied maintenance schedule.

ZHITIAN designs and manufactures twin screw extruder gearboxes for continuous compounding and provides gearbox repair and replacement services.
If a check cannot be confirmed before start-up, send the gearbox identification, installation photographs, relevant readings and a description of the issue to ZHITIAN. Resolve the question before progressing to the next commissioning stage.
